Dedicated Recirc System - Controller Only (DRS-C) Installation

Step 1:. Inspect your water heater supply lines

If the supply lines are old and inflexible they may need to be replaced.

Step 2: Turn off water heater

Electric - turn off power by either unplugging the water heater or shutting off the appropriate breaker.

Gas, propane or heating oil - turn off water heater and make sure the pilot light is turned off.

Failure to follow procedures described in this document could have impact upon warranty and may cause inadvertent property damage.

Step 3:  Turn off water

Turn off the water to the water heater.

In most cases there is a valve located above the water heater in the cold water supply line.
Step 4: Drain the hot water lines

Turn on any hot water faucet in the house and let it run until the water stops flowing. Leave the faucet on for the duration of the installation. Drain remaining hot water using the hot water spigot on the water heater.

Note: If water continues to flow, check to make sure that the water has been completely turned off. If the valve does not shut off the water flow completely turn off the valve supplying water to the house or at the water meter.

Note: The large yellow arrow on the Flow Monitor must be pointing in the direction of flow. The direction of water flow through the Flow Monitor can be changed by removing the 4 screws and turning the black cap and internal parts of Flow Monitor 180°. Reinsert screws and tighten.

The Flow Monitor must be installed outside the hot water return loop.  See figures above for the appropriate location for your application.

Step 5a:  Install Flow Monitor (return into drain valve)

Make sure arrow on Flow Monitor is pointing toward the female end.  If not, refer to directions above.

Screw the female end of the Flow Monitor on to the nipple on the cold water discharge pipe (see picture).

Thread cold water supply line onto the male end of the Flow Monitor.

Warning: do not over tighten.

Step 5b:  Install Flow Monitor (return into cold water line)

Make sure arrow on Flow Monitor is pointing in the direction of water flow.  If not, refer to directions above.

Install Flow Monitor in the cold water that feeds the water heater.  The Flow Monitor must be installed outside the dedicated return loop.

Warning: do not over tighten.

Step 6. Re-connect the cold water supply line
Reconnect cold water supply line or pipe.

Note:  If the pump is plugged into a wall outlet go to Step 7a below.

Note:  If the pump is hardwired go to Step 7b below.

Step 7a: Unplug the existing circulation pump from wall outlet
Plug Pump Manager into the wall and then plug the existing pump into the Pump Manager.
Step 7b: Preparing and connecting an existing hardwired pump

Note: Route the cord away from any vents on gas, propane or oil fired water heaters, if necessary.

Remove the existing electrical wires from the pump and the wall electrical box.

Cut both the plug and receptacle off of the Pump Manager. Make a note of which end has the plug.

Strip the outer sheathing and the 3 individual wires at both ends.  Insert the receptacle end of the Pump Manager wires in the pump and the plug end in the existing electrical box.

Step 8:  Set pump speed

Step 9:  Set pump mode
Set the rocker switch in the pump's electrical cord to the "Move" position (the continuous position in the picture to the right). Rocker switch DRS MT.png
Step 10:  Turn water back on

Make sure that a hot water faucet is turned on in the house and then slowly turn the water back on to the water heater. Check for leaks and repair as necessary.

Leave the water running until all of the air has been purged from the water pipes including all hose bibs. Turn off the faucet.

Note:  Both the hot and cold water lines need to be purged.

Step 11: Connect the Flow Monitor to the Pump Manager

Connect the low voltage wires from the Flow Monitor to the Pump Manager using the proper wire connectors.

If extra length is required standard thermostat wire can be used.

The color of the wires are as follows:

Flow Monitor - Blue and Brown

Pump Manager - Red and black or red and white

The blue wire connects to the red wire and the brown wire connects to either the black or the white wire.

Step 12:  Test Dedicated Recirc System

Turn on any hot water faucet in the house for 1 second and turn it off.

Pump should continue to operate for approximately 3 minutes after the faucet has been turned off.

Note:  The 3 minute timer will not start until all demand for hot water has ended.  The timer can be adjusted as needed but will require contacting customer support at (619) 786-2830 for assistance.

Note:  Opening the Pump Manager may void your warranty.
